Something Wonderful by Todd Puruam. I am currently listening to this book from Audible. It’s a great, easy to listen to book that brings to life the unusual musical relationship of Oscar and Hammerstein. You can get it from Barnes & Noble or Audible or many other places I’m sure!
Mr Sunny Bass play-along tracks : I just discovered this Italian bassist who releases play along tracks that are just bass lines. Really great to practice with or learn from, I love his channel!
Piano With Johnny: I stumbled upon this website while watching a video about Bossa Nova. I’ve never found music instruction videos to be all that helpful before, but this website is really different. Johnny May has so many videos, it’s unbelievable. They are broken into learning tracks and it’s very digestible! I just started the beginners blues course. Some of it I already knew, and some is just phrased differently, but the repetition, the exercises and additional content is so helpful. I started with a free trial and signed up as soon as I realized how much this would help me. I still think private lessons are necessary, but this is a fabulous supplement. https://pianowithjonny.com/
the Jazz Gym: One day in mid-October, 2021, I saw an advertisement for the “Jazz Gym” and I clicked on the ad with curiosity (apparently Instagram ads are very effective!). the Jazz Gym is a new idea, only started in October of 2021. You pay a flat, monthly price for unlimited “workouts”. Workouts are scheduled and happen over zoom (so not flaking out, they can all see you!). I wasn’t sure what this would be or if I was advance enough for it, but honestly, this is exactly what I needed! Social motivation. Constant exposure to new exercises & licks. The reminder to spend an hour everyday just practicing and not overthinking about it. I could rave about this enough. I can already feel a difference and it’s barely been a month! https://www.jazzlessonvideos.com/thejazzgym
