I’m just a person, learning to do a thing, and using this blog to track my progress.
I always loved old musicals but somehow missed that there was an entire genre of music based on all of those musicals. At age 32 or so I heard a girl singing on a fuzzy NPR jazz station and pulled over to write down what it was. It just was so striking, it was so alive, and the sound of her voice was the sound I wanted.
(in case you’re wondering, it was Nikki Yanovsky singing Ella’s Airmail Special)
From there, it’s history. I googled “jazz” and found myself at jazz camps, at jazz concerts, at jazz educational events.
I’m not sure where I’m going from here. I’d love to just be good at this. Maybe that means going back to school one day? Maybe that just means a lot of practice. But whatever it is, I’ll blog about it here :)
