My Shining Hour

The month of December was crazy. Getting Christmas gifts together, planning how I was going to get back to see my family safely… then Omnicron… it’s been a lot. And now it’s time to get back to it.

I re-joined Learn Jazz Standards again just to give myself motivation to keep learning new standards. Sometimes it’s overwhelming, what to do next.

I used to be a bit overwhelmed by LJS, I didn’t know what to do with the etude and the scale maps, but after a few months practicing 5x a week with the Jazz Gym I feel so much more equipped to make sense of it all.

This month’s assignment is “My Shining Hour.” It’s a song I don’t really know and once I listened to it, I’m not sure that I’m wild about it, but maybe it’s a great reason to do this song, to challenge myself to find a connection with a song I feel indifferent about right now.

Here’s a bit about it from LJS:

My Shining Hour is a popular standard written by Harold Arlen, words by Johnny Mercer. It was originally written for the 1943 film “The Skies the Limit”. This tune is most commonly played in Eb major (the key we will learn it in), but is sometimes also played in concert C major.

Will be back soon with updates!

Lyrics:

This moment, this minute
And each second in it
Will leave a glow upon the sky
And as time goes by, it will never die

This will be my shining hour
Calm and happy and bright
And in my dreams, your face will flower
Through the darkness of the night

Like the lights of home before me
Or an angel, who's watching o'er me
This will be my shining hour
'til I'm with you again

(Like the lights of home before me)
(Or an angel watching o'er me)
This will be my shining hour
'til I'm with you again
